INCLUSIVE TEACHING TOOL
Developed a tool to support inclusive teaching
NemSkema is a web app that helps primary school teachers create structured yet flexible schedules, improving classroom experiences for all pupils, including those with autism and ADHD.
Timeline
A year-long project consisting of a half-year pre-master thesis focused on research and analysis, followed by a half-year master thesis dedicated to design, development, and testing. After initial development, I redesigned the solution based on user feedback.
Background
The 2012 inclusion reform aimed to integrate neurodiverse pupils (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, etc.) into mainstream education, but its implementation has faced significant challenges due to insufficient support structures. The pre-master thesis explored these challenges, highlighting the need for tools that enhance inclusivity in the classroom.
Based on these insights, NemSkema was developed as a practical solution, providing teachers with an intuitive way to organize and adapt schedules to better support all pupils.
This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, interview, workshop, design, prototyping, and testing phases.
Research & Planning
I began by exploring research articles, websites & forums to understand neurodiversity and challenges in inclusive education. Using a Miro board, I organized key findings with stickers for better clarity.
Interviews
Since tools for older neurodiverse pupils were scarce, I interviewed teachers from 7 schools (3 public, 1 special, and 2 high schools), each with at least 3+ participants. Insights were analyzed using an Affinity Diagram, with schools color-coded to reveal challenges and patterns.
Inspiration Card Workshop
To involve teachers early, I designed a workshop using Inspiration Cards, with 30 technology cards (digital tools) and 30 domain cards (education context) to spark creative solutions. Teachers developed eight concepts, with three (1, 4, & 8) selected for further development:
Structured Education (1): A workshop-based approach following Borhs' 10 H’s.
Digital Note App (4): A tool for managing notes, homework, and plans, combining Aula, Lektio, and MinUddannelse.
Reflection Tool (8): Uses the 3-2-1 method for self-evaluation with reminders.
Sketching & Wireframing
Building on research and workshop insights, I sketched multiple ideas to explore solutions. After refining them, I wireframed in Figma, experimenting with key user flows for the most important functionality. Teacher students helped validate usability and classroom practicality.
Prototyping & Testing
To test usability early, I created prototypes based on selected flows for quick iterations before high-fidelity mockups. A semi-structured usability test with unfamiliar teachers let me observe their navigation through the system. Their feedback guided the redesign as a personal project.
NemSkema redesign simplifies classroom organization, making it easier for pupils to manage tasks while giving teachers flexibility in lesson planning.
Simplified Task Management
The pupil interface provides a clear, structured way to handle tasks, homework, and schedules, with color-coded elements that help pupils differentiate subjects and reduce overload.
Flexible Lesson Setup
Teachers can customize lesson structures with modular components to fit class needs while ensuring consistency and clarity for pupils.
Inclusive & Scalable Design
The design ensures accessibility for all pupils, including neurodiverse learners, while being scalable to accommodate diverse learning environments and classroom setups.
Here, the project's key outcomes are highlighted, including usability improvements, accessibility enhancements, and positive teacher feedback.
Usability Improvement
The redesign simplified scheduling with streamlined navigation, modular components, and a clearer layout, making the system easier to use.
Accessibility Enhancement
Updated colour contrasts, clearer visual cues, and a revised indication system improved readability. Teachers reported fewer distractions and better focus.
Positive Teacher Feedback
Teachers found the new version easier to use and better suited to their workflow. Feedback highlighted greater clarity and a smoother scheduling experience.
